Acid Reflux
Sore Throat
Many people are surprised to learn that you can have
an acid reflux sore throat.
When you think about it it shouldn't be that surprising. It really is just a matter of how
severe the reflux is.
As you probably know, acid reflux refers to acid from the stomach backing up into the esophagus.
Since the esophagus doesn't have protective mucosa the acid backup irritates and damages the lining of the
esophagus.
This is typically limited to the far end of the esophagus immediately next to the stomach. It's
the cause of the typical burning discomfort that we refer to as "heartburn".
The Cause of Acid Reflux Sore Throat
There is really nothing to confine the damage to the last part of the
esophagus. If the reflux is bad enough it can continue further up the the esophagus and can even reach the
back of the throat.
This is the cause of acid reflux sore throat. It's irritation in the back of the throat as
result of acid from the stomach backing on the way up the esophagus. As I talk about on other pages, it can even
leak into the windpipe causing lung and breathing problems.

This problem is more likely to happen at night when the person with reflux is lying down because
it's easier for fluid from the stomach to back up into the esophagus sense gravity isn't holding it down.
Acid Reflux Sore Throat without Heartburn?
What surprises many people is that they can have acid reflux sore throat without having other
symptoms of acid reflux.
Specifically, they may not have any chest or stomach discomfort whatsoever but still have
irritation of the throat and/or larynx due to acid reflux.
I'm not really sure why this happens. It's probably just a difference in a given individual's
sensitivity at one part of the G.I. tract versus another. In any case it's something to keep in mind if you suffer
from acid reflux.
Sometimes people with acid reflux sore throat will notice a metallic taste in their mouth. This
is one clue that the sore throat may be secondary to acid from the stomach.
Another thing to keep in mind is that acid from the stomach can actually cause dental problems
because it weakens the teeth enamel.
If you have acid reflux and a sore throat that never seems to go away it may well be that the
two are related. That makes it all the more important that you address the acid reflux can get proper
treatment.
