Heartburn Foods

Heartburn after a Meal

Most of us have been through it. We've experienced extreme discomfort because we didn't pay enough attention to heartburn foods.

We eat a meal. Maybe we ate too much, either because that's our habit or because it tasted good. Or maybe we ate some foods we knew might bother us, again because it's our habit to eat them or we thought they tasted too good to refuse.

Whatever the reason for our indiscretion, not too long afterwards we pay a price for it. We experience the gnawing, burning sensation and intense discomfort of heartburn. Maybe it bothers us short after you finish eating a maybe it comes on when we are trying to go to sleep.

For some of us it happens only occasionally. For others, it's all too frequent. In either case, we really should know about and pay attention to foods associated with heartburn.

It's not surprising that our diet has a major impact on heartburn and acid reflux. The foods we feed our body affect every aspect of our health. After all, nutrients we take in are the building blocks from which our continually renews itself.

Not only that, but our G.I. tract has to break down, digest and absorb the food we eat before we can benefit from the nutrients it contains. The gastrointestinal system is meant to handle foods that are very different from the modern diet. It's not surprising that problems arise when our diet is less than ideal.

We can think of heartburn foods is falling into two categories: ones that help and ones that hurt. Let's begin with a general principle and then discuss the heartburn foods that hurt.

Your Individual Heartburn Diet

A general rule to remember is that everyone is unique and the best way to determine what foods trouble you is to pay attention to what you eat and how you feel afterwards. Most people won't take the time to do it, but keeping a food log helps greatly.

This simply means recording what you eat when in knowing whether or not you have any heartburn or indigestion later. After you've kept the log for a while, you can look back over it and see if you notice any patterns.

Heartburn Foods to Avoid

some foods that cause heartburn

Having said that, there are certain foods that commonly cause problems and you should stay away from if you regularly suffer from heartburn. These include:

• Acidic juices such as orange juice and lemonade
• tomato-based foods, especially sauces
• onions and garlic
• Alcoholic beverages
• carbonated drinks
• coffee and caffeinated drinks
• peppermint
• chocolate
• fried and greasy foods
• most fast foods and junk foods

Again, this is just a generalized starting point. One thing you might do is to eliminate these foods for a week or so and see if your symptoms get better. Then gradually introduce them one at a time and notice if the symptoms return. If they do, then you've confirmed that's a food you need to stay away from.

Now let's consider foods that help heartburn.

Foods That Help Prevent Heartburn

It's great to realize that a diet that's good for heartburn is also one that's good for your health in general.

For example, people with heartburn generally do well with non-acidic fruits such as apples, melons, berries and so forth.

They also tolerate most vegetables (again, onions, garlic and leeks being a common exception).

Protein sources should be lean, such as chicken breasts or broiled fish.

In general, carbohydrates should be  as  unrefined and  as unprocessed as possible . this means staying away from foods consisting primarily of white flour and sugar (most snack foods, cookies and other junk food ) and emphasizing whole grains .

And the diet should include small amounts of healthy fats such as olive oil.

Also, remember that the amount you eat makes a difference. Eating large meals increases the pressure in the stomach which increases the chance of acid backing up into the esophagus and causing heartburn.

One food that you should consider including in your diet regularly is yogurt. Yogurt contains healthy bacteria. It's becoming increasingly clear that are rather abnormal modern diet, with all its additives, disrupts the normal, healthy bacteria in our G.I. tract which in turn leads to many different abdominal symptoms. These symptoms can include bloating, constipation and others as well as heartburn.

Eating yogurt helps maintain normal bacteria in your G.I. tract. If you take supplements and you want to go a step farther, you can now find supplemental capsules containing healthy bacteria. These are often referred to as "probiotics".

I hope you can see that the good and bad heartburn foods affect more than your symptoms of heartburn. Eating a proper diet would not only help resolve problems with indigestion and heartburn but will also improve your overall health and sense of well-being.
