Heartburn Home Remedies

Heartburn is a miserable, burning fact of life for many people. Doctors often prescribe some
pretty powerful medications to bring symptoms under control. But like any drug, these medications have side
effects. It's well worth trying some heartburn home remedies before taking a drug. For many people home remedies
work quite well.
For mild cases of heartburn, all you may need to do is adjust your diet a little bit and take
the occasional antacid if you have a flare-up.
Heartburn Foods
The exact foods that cause problems vary from person to person, but in general acidic
foods such as orange juice or tomato sauces are troublesome. You can get more details on the page The Importance of Diet in Acid Reflux Control.
In addition to the types of food you eat, you also need to adjust the amount of food and when
you eat. Large meals increased pressure in the stomach and make it more likely that acid from the stomach will
gurgle up into the esophagus.

The same is true if you lie down immediately after eating. For that reason, your last meal of
the day should be several hours before you go to bed. You may also want to consider using an acid reflux wedge
pillow as part of your home remedy program.
Choosing the Right Antacid to
Treat Heartburn
The next thing to consider using is an antacid. These work by neutralizing the stomach acid,
thereby making it less likely that it will irritate and burn the esophagus.
Antacids come in either liquid or tablets form. Although it's easier to carry tablets with you,
my preference for treating heartburn is to use the liquid, especially if you're already having symptoms. That's
because the liquid antacids will neutralize any acid that's already in your esophagus as you swallow it.

If you read the ingredients of the different brands of liquid antacids at the drugstore, you'll
see that many of them contain aluminum compounds and others contain calcium-based antacids. Aluminum is not a
required nutrient, so my preference is to stay away from it. Most of us could use a little extra calcium in our
diet, so I recommend that you ask your pharmacist recommend an antacid containing calcium.
Here's one tip to remember if you find yourself awake in the middle of the night with heartburn
and no antacid in your medicine cabinet. Most of us have baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in our kitchen cupboards.
This is probably the original antacid and an old-time home remedy. Mix a couple teaspoons in water, let the fizzing
die down and swallow.
Don't do this too often because taking too much has been known to upset the acid base balance in
your body.
Fight Heartburn Fire with Fire
Having just talked about using antacids, this next recommendation may seem a little odd. That
is, using apple cider vinegar to treat acid reflux. In a way it's kind of sounds like treating fire with fire.
There are a few different theories on how it works, but I don't think anyone really knows for sure. The bottom line
is that a lot of people swear by it and there probably isn't any harm in seeing it works for you.
If you want to try it, use the unfiltered cider vinegar that you'll find at a health food store.
Mix one or 2 tablespoons in a glass of water and drink it before meals. Some people add a little bit of honey
and/or a quarter teaspoon of baking soda. You can experiment with those variations to see if you notice any
difference
Herbal Home Remedies For Heartburn
You can also use some herbs to help manage heartburn. There's more information about that at
Herbal Remedies for Acid Reflux, but here's a short list of some
you might find helpful.
Slippery Elm and licorice both work by provided a protective coating on the G.I. tract. They
work best if the taken before meals. If you are going to use licorice be sure to find and extract that is labeled
as " deglycyrrhizinated."
Naturopaths think of burdock as a detoxifying and cleansing herb. Some people find it also helps
alleviate reflux of symptoms.
A Holistic
Heartburn Treatment System
There other heartburn home remedies you can consider, but I think these are enough to get you
started.
I can also recommend a completely natural heartburn treatment system that you may want to
try. It's called Heartburn No More and it is a five-step holistic system that will allow you to currently cure your
acid reflux.
